Visiting the Mabel Dodge Luhan House in Taos, New Mexico

If you are ever in Taos, New Mexico, be sure you stop by the Mabel Dodge Luhan house. Our Desert Divas group had a special tour on our day in Taos, but the house does operate as a bed and breakfast and you might possibly reserve a room stayed in by Georgia O'Keeffe or Ansel Adams.

The sign on the gate.

Mabel Dodge Luhan was famous for a number of reasons, but it was her 1923  marriage to Taos Indian Tony Luhan that kept her in Taos. She was a wealthy patron of the arts who attracted artists and writers to Taos such as D.H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams, Willa Cather, Georgia O'Keeffe, and others.

The doorway is very inviting. The house is a National Historic Landmark and functions as an inn and conference center now.

The gates to the house and compound.

The house was called Los Gallos (the roosters) and ceramic ones are placed around the roof. The windows you see here were painted by D.H. Lawrence so he wouldn't have to see Mabel in the bath.

Another view of the house.

Love these hand-carved and painted doors.

The steps up to Mabel's room were painted like a rug.

The bed in Mabel's room was built inside the room because it was so big.

The fireplace in Mabel's bedroom.

A doorway into the library.

Dennis Hopper owned the house at one time after he filmed Easy Rider so there are photos of him around (and lots of stories!).

Mabel's birdhouses.

Our congenial Desert Divas group. If you are in Taos, go up to the house and ask about staying there. They do have brochures about the bed and breakfast and you'll see a little of the house and grounds.
