Hit the Road with SchoolArts and CRIZMAC

We have a lot of fun with our groups!

Join SchoolArts Magazine and CRIZMAC Art & Cultural Materials for two amazing travel opportunities in summer 2016! This past summer, a terrific group of educators and others from all over the country attended our seminars in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Together we met incredible artists, attended presentations, enjoyed museum visits, and visited artists in their workshops and homes. You can join us, too.

In 2016, we will be offering two different experiences: Folk Art and Culture of Oaxaca, Mexico, and Tres Culturas: Exploring the Artistic Spirit of Santa Fe.

Folk Art & Culture of Oaxaca, June 26–July 2, 2016

Oaxaca City, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, is rich with historic colonial architecture, exquisite museums, and vibrant folk-art traditions. In addition to exploring the amenities of the city, you will visit thriving folk-art villages where talented artists create fabulous wood carvings, textiles, and pottery. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the homes of master Zapotec and Mixe artists to watch them demonstrate and discuss the techniques and traditions that make their work so special. Opportunities to immerse yourself in the rich history and traditions through visits to museums and the stunning archaeological site of Monte Alban will deepen your understanding of the native people. Your tour leaders, Nancy Walkup and Stevie Mack, will provide an intimate and rewarding travel experience. The magic of Oaxaca is guaranteed to inform your art and capture your soul!

An evaluation from Andrean Andrus, Denver, CO, one of Oaxacan group this past summer:

What a great trip! I loved the Oaxaca trip and I will be very excited to share my experience with the entire faculty on the first day of school on Aug. 17th.  Having done the trip for 15 years you really have every aspect figured out.  The restaurants were all wonderful.  Having a large table set up for all of us at each restaurant was a real plus.  I liked having the whole group together.  The food was FANTASTIC.  Mexican food is wonderful but now I realize Oaxacan  food is special.  The cost of the trip was perfect.  I felt we received everything you promised plus more.  Traveling to the artist’s homes and studios (all were outstanding!!!!!) was priceless.  I think we all had plenty of free time.  If people wanted to tour more, or shop there was extra time after returning from the artists.  If people wanted to rest in their room before dinner there was time for that also.  I felt very safe in Oaxaca, even at night.  I learned so much and can’t wait to share my experiences with my students this year.   You were all so much fun and so knowledgeable to travel with!

Tres Culturas: Exploring the Artistic Spirit of Santa Fe, July 13–19, 2016

The spirit of New Mexico may best be captured through the senses—the distinctive smell of wet earth from a storm, the scent of burning piƱon, the incredibly turquoise sky, and the rough organic texture of rounded adobe forms. This spirit finds expression in a unique way of life created from the contributions of three cultures: Pueblo Indian, Hispanic, and Anglo. Tres Culturas is designed to help travelers explore and understand the diversity of New Mexico’s artistic heritage from ancient times to the present. Highlights include a tour of Georgia O’Keeffe’s home in Abiquiu, a celebration at a living history museum, in-person views of petroglyphs, a visit to Taos Pueblo (also designated a UNESCO World Heritage site), a visit to Roxanne Swentzell’s Tower Gallery, and much more.

Responses from New Mexico group travelers:

Thank you for arranging such a memorable excursion. It was truly the best professional development I have had the opportunity to attend. Catherine Uhazie, Bark River, MI

I can’t thank you enough for bringing the beauty of New Mexico alive in such an exciting, fun, and inspirational way. The memories of this trip will last a lifetime and the stories as well as learning will be eagerly passed on to my students.
