I'm just back from the TAEA conference in Dallas this year, where we offered 3 different hands-on workshops at the Davis Publications booth in the commercial exhibits. We presented one each for elementary, middle school, and high school, all based on lessons in the Davis Publications textbooks.
I presented a workshop based on molas from the San Blas Islands off of Panama. These are reverse appliqué, highly detailed textiles originally used as parts of clothing. You can download my presentation here. to share with your students. We made ours from paper.
A blouse made from two molas, the same on front and back. Each mola takes about a month to make.
The lesson includes cultural content, color theory, and symmetry.
Tom Cieciorka presented a middle school lesson on textured clay slabs.
Everyone was envious of Tom's great texture tools and his container for them.
Participants got to take their clay slabs home to dry and fire.
And Samantha Melvin presented a high school lesson that involved drawing and moving from 2D to 3D.
