Mandala Sand Paintings by Monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery

Yesterday we went to downtown Santa Fe to see a mandala sand painting in process by Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery.

We were allowed to take photos. It was amazing to see the detail the monk could get by gently tapping on a tool that contained the pigments with another.

You can't see it in my photos, but the lines and colors were all applied like a relief, with higher concentrations of color within the lines.

A shrine to the Dali Lama.

Tools used to apply the pigment.

Bowls of pigment ready for use.
