All my Kindergarten and first grade classes have now cycled through my building block lesson this week. Having the students draw what they build is always an amazing experience.
Thanks to Cathy Topal, author of Davis Publication's kindergarten book for Explorations in Art, Thinking with a Line, and many other wonderful books for teaching young children, for the idea to have students make drawings from art they have made with other materials. I also use her method to have students draw collages they have made. Give it a try - you could certainly do it with any grade.
Great idea! I have a set of blocks the kids LOVE to play with in the art room when they have finished early. They build architectural forms, but I had never thought of them drawing what they build. Great way to teach observational drawing for the older kids and to teach shape to younger. Thanks!

What a great way of capturing a child's imagination! Keep up the good work.
