50 Contemporary Artists You Should Know

I just received a new book, 50 Contemporary Artists You Should Know, published by Prestel in Munich, London, and New York, 2011, authored by Brad Finger and Christiane Weidemann. It consists mainly of two-page spreads about each artist.
Unfortunately, the authors included no explanation for their criteria of including these artists. Only 16 are women: Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Mona Hatoum, Marlene Dumas, Nan Goldin, Sophie Calle, Cindy Sherman, Shirin Neshat, Tracey Moffatt, Pipilotti Rist, Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread, Elizabeth Peyton, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Kara Walker. What female artists do you think are missing?
Some of the male artists (which seem to include a lot of European artists) include Cy Twombly, Gerhard Richter, David Hockney, Bill Viola, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, Jeff Koons, Al Weiwei, Takashi Murakami, Damien Hirst, and Matthew Barney. Who would be on your list of contemporary artists you would want your students to know?
