I wanted to become an art teacher because the jobs that I have had involving working with children were the jobs that I enjoyed the most. Art was also my favorite subject in school and a career that involves the two things I am passionate about seemed ideal. Despite encouragement from everyone, I was hesitant to pursue art education at first. Instead I decided to go for a degree in interior design but after my first year I knew that was not the job for me. As soon as I switched to art education and started taking classes, I instantly knew I had made the right choice and I had finally found my calling.
I want to be an art teacher because I feel that in order to be a well-rounded student, a child needs to be able to exercise both sides of his/her brain. They need to learn the core subjects but they also need to be able to connect with their artistic sides. Our society has started to treat art like it is something we can do without in our schools. What people don’t realize is that some form of art or artistic idea influences us all every day such as through advertisements or food labels. I want to teach my students the importance of art and to use their artistic abilities to open the eyes of others in the community.
As a teacher, my teaching style will be visual and hands-on. My focus is on child-based learning rather than teacher-based instruction. I will expose students to diverse works of art and promote experiential learning through partnerships with local art museums. Art experiences will be an integral part of my classroom and curriculum. My students will experiment with various art materials, techniques, and technologies in order to discover their true aesthetic identities.
I will teach my students the basic fundamentals of art and how to use those components to create pieces of artwork that express who they are and what they like. I will promote a well-rounded curriculum, including an equal balance of three-dimensional and two-dimensional projects including a major emphasis on the fundamentals and principles of art and design.
I will incorporate art history within the assigned projects so that students can learn by example from the many great artists who came before them. I will also teach students how to critique their own artwork and the artwork of their peers. It is important for students to learn how to discuss artwork so that they can look at their own work and know what needs to be done to make good and meaningful work. I also want them to be able to reflect on why they like certain types of art and why they do not.
I want my students to be able to use art to express themselves. I want my classroom to be a place where students can come and stop worrying about their next test or homework assignment and clear their minds and be creative. Art is a wonderful outlet for students. When students are having fun they can stretch their creativity to lengths they didn’t even know were possible.
I honestly believe that if I had continued with interior design I would not have ended up with a career that I felt passionate about. I am passionate about children and teaching them different ways of critical thinking through art. I have no doubt that this is the career for me and I hope to one day inspire my students to consider art as a possible career for themselves.
