On the way to Ghost Ranch

SchoolArts Magazine and CRIZMAC are pleased to announce our seminars for next summer in Santa Fe. The first one will be:

Desert Divas: Influential Women Artists and Patrons of the Southwest
Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico
July 3-10, 2014

The stunning New Mexico landscape has attracted artists and patrons to the Santa Fe and Taos regions for years, including many remarkable women—both past and present. From the spectacular black pottery of Maria Martinez and the paintings of Pablita Velarde to the brilliant canvasses of Georgia O’Keeffe, the contemporary sculptures of Roxanne Swentzell, and the mixed-media of Marion Martinez, their works have had a profound impact on the art world. Other innovative women such as Mabel Dodge Luhan, Millicent Rogers, and Mary Cabot Wheelwright were also at the artistic forefront, creating a living legacy in the arts through their patronage and museum development. Join Stevie Mack from CRIZMAC, Nancy Walkup from SchoolArts Magazine, and Bill Yarborough on this extraordinary trip. Explore the fascinating lives and legacies of these “desert divas” and become immersed in artistic brilliance!

Our hotel is well located within walking distance to the central historic plaza, museums, galleries, restaurants, and incredible shopping. If your schedule permits, take some time to stroll around and familiarize yourself with the city. In the evening Stevie Mack and Nancy Walkup will meet you in the hotel lobby and escort you to a welcome dinner with our group of travelers. (D)

Friday, July 4: Orientation, Opening Lecture, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum
After a great breakfast at the hotel, we will meet for an orientation. Handouts and resources will be distributed for your use followed by an opening lecture on the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe. We will take a lunch break and visit the plaza where you will have time to enjoy a local restaurant and familiarize yourself with the area. After lunch we will reconvene for a tour of the O’Keeffe Museum. (B)

Saturday, July 5: Ghost Ranch, Georgia O’Keeffe’s Home in Abiquiu
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we’ll depart Santa Fe for O’Keeffe country. On our travels, we’ll encounter the vast sky and open landscape that inspired the artist. Our first stop is Ghost Ranch, a place where O’Keeffe lived for several years. We’ll take time to visit the ranch and photograph the same mountains and vistas that she painted. The charming Abiquiu Inn is our next stop and the designated rendezvous location for tours of O’Keeffe’s home. You will  have time to enjoy lunch on your own at the Inn’s excellent restaurant. We’ll return to Santa Fe in the late afternoon. (B)

Sunday, July 6: Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Wheelwright Museum, International Folk Art Museum
After breakfast, we will meet for our morning presentation that introduces the lives and works of several of the generous art patrons who left their legacies to the arts of the southwest that we enjoy today. Mabel Dodge Luhan is known for the artists and writers she brought to the southwest. Millicent Rogers and Mary Cabot Wheelwright established world-class museums with their personal collections. We’ll depart from the hotel and spend the rest of the day at the famous “museum hill,” the site of some of Santa Fe’s best museums. At MIAC we’ll see a comprehensive display of pottery from all of the pueblos. The Wheelwright offers us a chance to learn more about and see the collection of one of our divas. Our visit to the International Folk Art Museum will focus on the Hispanic wing. We’ll enjoy lunch on our own at the Museum café. (B)

Monday, July 7: Taos, Home of Mabel Dodge Luhan, Millicent Rogers Museum, Roxanne Swentzell’s Tower Gallery, Poeh Center
We’ll set out immediately after breakfast for Taos, where our first stop will be the famed 19th century San Francisco de Asis Church, said to be the most painted and photographed site in New Mexico. Next we will visit Los Gallos, the house where Mabel Dodge Luhan and her husband Tony hosted so many artists and writers. After a tour of the home, you’ll have time to explore the charming central plaza of Taos during a long lunch break. Next we will visit the Millicent Rogers Museum where you’ll have an opportunity to view works by Maria Martinez and members of her family, along with many other famed Native American artists. On our trip back to Santa Fe, we stop in Pojoaque to visit Roxanne Swentzell’s Tower Gallery and the Poeh Center to view her contemporary clay and bronze sculptures. (B)

Tuesday, July 8: Art-Making with Marion Martinez, Pabilta Velarde Museum of Indian Women in the Arts, Andrea Fisher Gallery
Following breakfast, Marion Martinez, a well-respected mixed-media artist, will guide us in an art-making activity. Martinez’s cutting edge work using computer parts has gained her significant recognition. You will enjoy working with the treasure trove of collage materials she supplies to create your own artwork. After lunch on your own, we will visit the newest museum in Santa Fe dedicated to the work of Native American women artists. A stop at the renowned Andrea Fisher Gallery to view Native American pottery will complete our activities. (B)

Wednesday, July 9: Trujillo Weaving Studio, Santuario de Chimayó and Farewell Lunch
After yet another wonderful breakfast at the Inn, we will travel to Chimayó to visit the Trujillo weaving studio and learn about the important role of textiles in the region. This area is also home to the famous Santuarió de Chimayo, built in the early 1800s and renowned for its healing powers. The restored children’s chapel is replete with beautifully painted images. Our farewell luncheon will be at Rancho De Chimayo Restaurante, located in a century-old adobe home. After our return to the city, you will enjoy some free time in Santa Fe for last minute shopping or site-seeing. (B) (L)
