Climb Aboard the Dream Rocket

To what heights can your students' dreams go? You still have time for their artwork to climb on board the Dream Rocket. The Dream Rocket Project was founded by The International Fiber Collaborative, Inc. (IFC) in response to the growing need within our communities for supplemental arts education for public schools, community arts, and perhaps most importantly, an outlet for individuals to find common ground.

IFC programs link learning and creativity in the arts to science, math, engineering, and the humanities. We have successfully generated participation from individuals, schools, and groups in approximately 515 cities, 50 states, and 19 countries. Public programming has been a catalyst for creativity in health care facilities, libraries, schools, museums, and other locations, and has generated about 18,528 art submissions collected from an estimated 13,058 individuals as part of three major projects.

In 2009, the IFC launched its latest endeavor, The Dream Rocket Project. The Dream Rocket project is a large scale art project based on creativity and teamwork made of thousands of artworks created by schools, groups, and individuals from around the U.S., and around the world. Thousands of artworks from various regions of the world are being collected, and eventually will be connected side by side to wrap the 365’ Saturn V Moon Rocket at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The Dream Rocket Project started in 2009 by artist Jennifer Marsh, and teachers around our nation. It is a multi-year project with an ultimate goal of collecting 5,000 to 8,000 artworks which will be assembled side by side to fully wrap a Saturn V Moon Rocket replica for a 60 day exhibition, scheduled for May 1 - June 30, 2015. Submissions have been received by individuals, groups and schools from 17 countries, 46 states, and 363 communities. We have had an increase by 80% in new submissions each quarter.

While we continue to raise the resources needed to create this giant wrap, we have partnered with 130 venues in exhibiting over 4,200 submissions over the last three years. The number of exhibits we have completed has increased by 425%.

Although we have been granted permission to wrap the Saturn V replica, we continue exploring options (if any) in wrapping the real Saturn V instead. Efforts to wrap either the replica or the real Saturn V are monumental in all aspects and are dependent on many different factors, therefore we can offer no guarantees of a successful wrapping at any point. None the less we are committed to this program and continue full steam ahead.

The selected themes for submissions encourage individuals to expand beyond the present state of the world and imagine our future. Perhaps most importantly, individuals are challenged to imagine their contributions to that future. These individual dreams & aspirations will combine to create a monumental 32,000 sq ft work of art, providing a tangible demonstration of the beauty of individuals collaborating to meet universal challenges. Participants are asked to make 2-foot-square panels. These can be collaborative works.

All submitted artworks will be placed on display and continue traveling to venues up until the time that the Saturn 5 is wrapped. You can see some of the artwork already submitted on Flickr. The Saturn Wrapping Expedition will be held at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, in Huntsville, Alabama from May 1 – June 30, 2015.
