See the WorldBeat Center in Balboa Park in San Diego

Going to NAEA San Diego and Balboa Park? Don't miss the WorldBeat Center, housed in a round, colorfully painted former water tower, that first opened in Balboa Park in San Diego in 1996. The Center is dedicated to promoting and preserving African, African-American, and other indigenous cultures of the world through art, music, dance, education, and technology. Classes in international dance and drumming are offered year round, along with concerts and lectures.

WorldBeat Center also features a Children’s Ethnobotany Garden. The unique organic herb, fruit, and vegetable garden honors the memory of George Washington Carver, and is dedicated to teaching young people about the role of plants in society. Gardening classes are available to schools, youth programs, individuals, and families by appointment or on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. The garden also serves
the nearly 6,000 students in the 5th Grade Balboa Park Integration Program.

The WorldBeat Center wasn't open the day I was there, but I loved the murals that cover it. Don't miss it if you go to Balboa Park. It is on the outskirts of the park, not in the center, near a children's playground.
