A Santa Fe Preview for the NAEA Leadership Conference

Are you coming to the NAEA Leadership Conference in Santa Fe next week? I thought I would give you a little preview of what you might see.

You'll see contemporary as well as traditional Native American art. This piece is by Diego Romero, one of my favorites. You can find his work at the Robert Nichols Gallery on Canyon Road and at Andrea Fisher downtown.

You should go to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, where you can take photos of the permanent collection. It is very near the conference hotel.

There is nothing better than seeing O'Keeffe's paintings in person.

This is O'Keeffe's studio recreation at the Museum.

The Museum of Fine Arts is also near our hotel and is hosting a Judy Chicago exhibition.

The Spanish Market and the Contemporary Spanish Market will be that weekend. Marion Martinez, who calls herself a circuit board artist, will be in the Contemporary Spanish Market. Be sure to look for the children's tables.

Art is everywhere you look. This is at the Museum of Contemporary Native American Arts, across the street from the Cathedral.

This food cart is always on a corner of the Plaza and it is good for a quick bite. Another inexpensive place to eat near the Plaza is the Burrito Company. They are just around the corner from the Palace of the Governors on the Plaza.

If you get to Museum Hill, don't miss the Museum of International Folk Art, my favorite museum.

There is an amazing Japanese kite exhibition you shouldn't miss.

Or the Museum of Indian Art and Culture.

Or the Wheelwright Museum of American Indian Art.

You'll need to learn about red and green chile. Ask which is hotter before you order. My favorite is always the green. If you want to try both, ask for "Christmas." Sides may include beans, rice, or posole (made with hominy).

The state dessert of New Mexico is flan. Like egg custard but better. It negates the heat of the chiles.

You may see some interesting characters.

You may see some street art.

See if you spot this guy!

And you'll want to come back!
